Tragic Crash Claims Life of Winter Resident in Barron County, Wisconsin

Authorities have released the names of the individuals involved in a fatal crash that took place in Barron County, Wisconsin. The driver of the SUV, identified as 69-year-old Gene Hannack from Winter, Wisconsin, tragically lost his life in the accident. The driver of the semi-truck, 52-year-old Andrew Akenson from Hudson, Wisconsin, was reportedly unharmed.

Details of the Incident

The fatal crash occurred on February 28, 2024, at 12:16 a.m. on Highway 8 near County Highway M in the vicinity of Cameron, Wisconsin. According to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation- Wisconsin State Patrol Northwest Region Spooner Post, the collision involved a semi-tractor-trailer and an SUV, resulting in injuries.

Sequence of Events

The press release states that the semi-truck was travelling eastbound on Highway 8 at the time of the incident. The SUV, travelling in the opposite direction, lost control and crossed the centerline, leading to a collision between the two vehicles. Following the impact, the SUV veered off the road and into a ditch, while the semi-truck came to a halt blocking both lanes of the highway.

Tragic Outcome

Regrettably, Gene Hannack, the driver of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
