An Edgewood man has been convicted in the tragic shooting death of William Doran, 29, in Joppatowne that occurred in December 2021. The incident took place in the 500 block of Dembytown Road, where Harford County sheriff’s deputies responded to a single vehicle collision on Dec. 10, 2021. Upon arrival, medics discovered that Doran had been shot below the eye, leading to his untimely death despite efforts to revive him.

Text Messages Point to Suspect

During the investigation, Harford County Sheriff’s Office detectives uncovered belligerent text messages sent to Doran’s phone from a person identified as “Reject P,” later identified as Alton William Cumbo, Jr., a 28-year-old resident of Edgewood. Additional cell phone data placed Cumbo at the scene of the crime at the time of the murder. Both the victim and the suspect were known to each other, according to authorities.

Verdict and Sentencing

Following a five-day trial, Cumbo was found guilty of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and illegal possession of a firearm. His sentencing has been scheduled for April 22. State’s Attorney Alison M. Healey expressed her pride in the successful prosecution, stating, “Our community should not be subjected to violence such as this, and is safer today with this successful verdict. We will continue to uphold our responsibility to this community by holding violent offenders accountable and removing them from our communities. I hope that this conviction brings some closure to the victim’s family and am grateful that our office has taken another murderer off our streets.”
