The Latest Subway Crime Statistics in New York City

MTA officials are set to review the latest subway crime statistics during their monthly committee meetings on Monday. The data reveals a notable increase in major crimes in January, but a decrease in February following the implementation of new safety measures.

Despite the drop in crime numbers, there is a growing concern regarding public perception of subway safety, particularly in light of a recent tragic incident on a D train in the Bronx.

In response to the surge in crimes in January, additional officers were deployed into the subway system, resulting in a 17.5% reduction in crime from February 1-24. However, crime rates remain elevated.

Last Friday, a fatal shooting occurred on a D train in the Bronx, claiming the life of 45-year-old William Alvarez. The incident took place at 5 a.m. when Alvarez got into an altercation with three suspects, leading to a physical confrontation that turned fatal.

Authorities have identified the suspects as 24-year-old Justin Herde, 38-year-old Betty Cotto, and 42-year-old Alfredo Trinidad based on video surveillance footage. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing subway crime as a top priority.

Chief Kemper highlighted the efforts made to combat crime in the subway system, stating, “We ended January up 45% in crime versus the year before. And that 45% was driven in large part by grand larcenies. So, credit of our mayor and our police commissioner, we always say public safety is the top priority.”

The fatal shooting on Friday marks the third homicide in the subway system this year, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring passenger safety.

As the MTA continues to address subway safety concerns, the community remains vigilant in advocating for enhanced security measures to protect commuters and maintain a secure environment for all passengers.
