A devastating incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon at Pottawattomie Park in Rogers Park, where a young woman tragically lost her life in a mass shooting. The 18-year-old victim, Keyonce Gladney, was not the intended target of the attack, according to Alderwoman Maria Hadden.
Reports indicate that Gladney was one of four individuals who were shot at the park, located at 7340 N. Rogers Ave. The group was gathered behind the park’s field house when two assailants entered the area and opened fire. Gladney sustained a fatal gunshot wound to her chest and was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was pronounced dead.
Additionally, a 22-year-old woman was shot in the foot, while a 20-year-old man was struck in the forehead, and a 19-year-old man was wounded in the hip. Fortunately, the latter three victims were transported to nearby hospitals and are in stable condition.
Authorities have revealed that the shooters fled the scene and were last seen heading north on Winchester Avenue. While the motive behind the attack remains under investigation, Alderwoman Hadden believes that the shooting was targeted towards one of the male victims.
As the community grapples with this senseless act of violence, both police and Park District officials have increased their presence at Pottawattomie Park. Park programs are continuing as scheduled, with crews seen power washing the area where the shooting occurred.
