Accident – Death – Obituary News :

EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — Vigils were held nationwide for Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old nonbinary student who tragically passed away after a confrontation in a high school bathroom. The incident took place at Owasso High School in Oklahoma, where Benedict and some friends were targeted by three girls in the restroom.
According to reports, the girls attacked Benedict after water was poured on them, resulting in a physical altercation. The following day, Benedict’s mother called emergency services to their home, reporting shallow breathing, rolling eyes, and curled hands. Despite initial concerns that the death may have been linked to the fight, preliminary autopsy results suggest otherwise.
Following the heartbreaking news, vigils were organized in various cities, including Boston, Minneapolis, New York, and Southern California. In El Paso, Texas, a candlelight vigil saw community members come together to mourn the loss and demand action against bullying and discrimination.
Similarly, in Huntington Beach, California, Kanan Durham of Pride at the Pier emphasized the importance of continuing the fight for justice beyond the vigils. LGBTQ+ groups nationwide have condemned the frequent bullying faced by nonbinary teens, highlighting the urgent need for a safer and more inclusive environment in schools.
In Tahlequah, Oklahoma, TahlEquality’s president, Sanj Cooper, acknowledged the traumatic nature of Benedict’s passing and arranged for therapists to be present at a vigil. Cooper expressed the community’s determination to speak out and advocate for change in the wake of such a devastating loss.
Meanwhile, in McAlester, Oklahoma, the Rainbow Connection organized a vigil at All Saints Episcopal Church, drawing attention to the previous murder of transgender man Dustin Parker in 2020. Matt Blancett, a member of the LGBTQ+ group, stressed the importance of community support and solidarity in the face of adversity.
As emotions run high and questions linger about the circumstances surrounding Benedict’s death, it is crucial for individuals to look out for one another and seek help when needed. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, collecting evidence and awaiting toxicology reports to shed light on the tragic events that unfolded at Owasso High School.
