The Fatal Shooting Near Georgia State University Campus
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon near the Georgia State University campus in Downtown Atlanta, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old man. The victim, who was not a student according to GSU officials, was fatally shot in the vicinity of The Mix apartments, located on Piedmont Avenue NE.
Police Response and Investigation
Atlanta Police Department officers swiftly responded to the scene at 120 Piedmont Avenue NE after receiving reports of a person shot just before 12:45 p.m. The area, which includes student apartments at The Mix and the nearby RaceTrac gas station, has unfortunately been the site of multiple shooting incidents in recent times.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the 21-year-old male victim with apparent gunshot wounds. Tragically, he was non-responsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The APD Homicide Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the case remains ongoing.

I want to provide further information about the recent shooting incident near the RaceTrac service station on Piedmont Avenue. Atlanta Police are currently investigating a confrontation between two groups that escalated into gunfire, resulting in the tragic loss of life. While none of the individuals involved have been identified as GSU affiliates, our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family.
In light of this incident, we are committed to enhancing campus safety measures and working closely with law enforcement to ensure the security of our community. We will continue to evaluate and implement strategies to safeguard our campus and its surroundings.
Previous Incidents in the Area
This recent shooting near the GSU campus adds to a series of violent events that have occurred in the vicinity. In December 2022, a GSU student lost their life to gun violence, while last October saw four individuals, including two students and a 19-year-old woman, wounded in a shooting incident. Additionally, in December, another person was fatally shot following a dispute near the RaceTrac gas station.
These recurring incidents highlight the need for heightened security measures and vigilance in and around the Georgia State University campus to ensure the safety of students and residents in the area.
