Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Tragic Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Plane Crash in Karachi

In May 2020, a devastating plane crash near Jinnah International Airport in Karachi sent shockwaves through the aviation industry. The investigation report by the Aircraft Investigation Board (AIB) has now shed light on the heartbreaking incident, attributing the loss of 101 lives to “human error” on the part of the two pilots.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

The detailed report revealed that the Airbus A320’s failure to land safely was a result of the pilots’ lack of proper judgment during the landing phase. Despite repeated warnings from the air traffic controller regarding incorrect altitude, the pilots proceeded with the landing attempt, leading to a catastrophic outcome.

Factors Contributing to the Crash

During the initial landing attempt, the aircraft’s engines made contact with the ground, causing the shutdown of the engine lubrication system and subsequent “engine failure.” The report also highlighted the absence of clear guidelines from PIA and the Civil Aviation Authority regarding pilots’ fasting during Ramadan, suggesting a potential contributory factor to the pilots’ lapse in judgment.

Inadequate Data Recording and Safety Concerns

Following the engine failure, the power supply onboard the aircraft was disrupted, resulting in the non-recording of the final four minutes of the flight data. The lack of coordination between the pilots during the landing attempt was also identified as a contributing factor to the tragedy. Additionally, the airworthiness records revealed that the Airbus A320 had a history of service with China Eastern Airlines before being incorporated into PIA’s fleet.

Calls for Enhanced Safety Measures

The tragic incident has brought to light the broader history of safety concerns surrounding PIA, with eight recorded aircraft incidents between 1965 and 2020. This has sparked renewed calls for enhanced safety measures within the aviation industry to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
