Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a recent development, food products such as carrot cookies and white pepper biscuits have been found to contain a banned industrial dye, prompting a nationwide recall. The Miaoli County Public Health Bureau announced on Saturday that these products, manufactured by Hsin Hao Food Co. in Miaoli, must be removed from shelves due to the presence of Sudan III, a carcinogenic dye prohibited for use in food processing in Taiwan.

Origin of the Contamination

The source of the chemical contamination was traced back to Sanhe Drug Co. in Henan Province, China. This company supplied chili powder containing Sudan III to a raw material dealer in New Taipei, named Bao Hsin Enterprises Co. Subsequently, Canho Enterprise Corp. in Changhua County, a client of Bao Hsin, distributed the tainted chili powder to Hsin Hao, leading to the production of the affected snacks.

Recall and Distribution

Following the discovery, the Miaoli County Public Health Bureau has instructed Hsin Hao not to distribute any remaining inventory of carrot cookies, white pepper biscuits, or chili powder. Additionally, products that have already been circulated to retailers like PX Mart are being recalled to prevent further consumption of the contaminated goods.

Health Risks and Regulations

Sudan dyes, including Sudan III, are classified as toxic substances by Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment’s Chemicals Administration. Prolonged exposure to these dyes can have detrimental effects on the liver and kidneys, as well as potentially increasing the risk of cancer. As a result, strict measures have been put in place by the Food and Drug Administration to prevent the import and distribution of such harmful substances.

Border Inspections and Recalls

The FDA has been conducting thorough inspections on chili powder imports from China since December last year, with a focus on products from Bao Hsin. Several batches of chili powder have already been recalled, including those used in the production of spicy shrimp chips sold under the brand “Hsia Wei Hsien.” The recall process is ongoing to ensure the safety of consumers.

Conclusion

It is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and informed about potential food contamination incidents. By staying updated on recall notices and product warnings, individuals can protect themselves and their families from the risks associated with harmful substances like Sudan dyes.
