Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The victim of a tragic crane accident at the construction site of Vancouver’s Oakridge Park has been identified as Yuridia Flores, a mother of two from Mexico.

Yuridia Flores, who had recently obtained permanent residency in Canada in 2023, was working as a labourer at the Cambie Street and 41st Avenue project when the accident occurred.

Tragic Accident

On Wednesday, a load broke free from one of the cranes at the site, plummeting hundreds of feet and fatally striking Flores.

Her common-law husband, Daniel Hernandez, who also worked at the site, received the devastating news while he was away for an appointment. He rushed back to find the area cordoned off and emergency services on the scene.

Despite being offered the chance to see her, Hernandez chose not to, unable to bear the thought of witnessing the aftermath of the accident.

Heartbreaking News

Hernandez had to break the news to their 16-year-old son, Diego, pulling him out of a soccer practice to deliver the devastating blow.

Diego, in disbelief, wanted to go to the hospital to see his mother, but Hernandez explained that he was not sure if they were allowed to view her body, which is currently with the coroner pending an autopsy.

Family Support

Ingrid, Yuridia’s older daughter who resides in Mexico, is expected to fly to Vancouver to accompany her mother’s body back to their hometown of Acapulco for a funeral.

The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the expenses incurred during this tragic time.

Workplace Safety

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and the construction site, which employs over 1,700 workers, remains under a stop-work order from WorkSafeBC.

Despite the immense loss, Hernandez holds no resentment towards any individuals involved in the incident. He hopes that Yuridia’s death will serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of workplace safety.
