Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Tragic Incident in Edmond, Oklahoma

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a vigil was held at All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester, Oklahoma, for Nex Benedict, a nonbinary teenager who tragically passed away following a fight in a high school bathroom. The vigil, organized by the McAlester Rainbow Connection, drew in more than two dozen people and was one of many scheduled across the country.

Sad Demise of Nex Benedict

Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student from Oklahoma, lost their life the day after an altercation in an Owasso High School restroom. The teen, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, was attacked by three girls after pouring water on them. The incident led to a physical altercation that ultimately resulted in Benedict’s untimely death.

Community Support and Resilience

Matt Blancett, who spearheaded the vigil with the Rainbow Connection, highlighted the importance of standing together as a community in the face of tragedy. Blancett emphasized the need for unity, especially in light of past incidents such as the murder of transgender man Dustin Parker in 2020.

Moreover, All Saints Priest Janie Koch stressed the significance of seeking support and looking out for one another during times of emotional turmoil. Koch urged individuals to be mindful of their peers and offer a helping hand to those in need.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the altercation, Benedict’s mother, Sue Benedict, initially expressed a desire to press charges. However, a police search warrant revealed that she later opted not to pursue legal action and instead requested intervention from school officials to address student conflicts on campus.

Law enforcement officials conducted an extensive investigation at Owasso High School, collecting evidence from the scene of the incident, including photographs, swabs, and student records. While initial reports suggested a potential felony murder case, subsequent findings from the autopsy indicated that Benedict’s death was not directly linked to injuries sustained during the fight.

Nationwide Support and Solidarity

As the community mourns the loss of Nex Benedict, vigils have been planned in various cities across Oklahoma and beyond. From California to New York, individuals have come together to show solidarity and support for the LGBTQ+ community and honour the memory of the young life cut short.

Let us remember Nex Benedict and all those who have been affected by senseless violence, standing together in unity and compassion during these challenging times.
