EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — Over twenty-five individuals gathered at a church in Edmond, Oklahoma for a vigil honoring Nex Benedict, a nonbinary teenager who tragically passed away following an altercation at a local high school.
Community Support
The emotional gathering took place at All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester and was organized by the McAlester Rainbow Connection. This event was just one of many vigils held nationwide in memory of Nex Benedict, with more than a dozen scheduled to take place through Monday.
Tragic Loss
Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student in Oklahoma, lost their life the day after a physical confrontation in a bathroom at Owasso High School. The teenager, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, was reportedly attacked by three girls after pouring water on them, as revealed in a video released by the police.
Call for Justice
Following the tragic incident, Nex’s mother contacted emergency services, expressing concern over their shallow breathing and other symptoms. The community, led by Matt Blancett of the Rainbow Connection, came together to advocate for justice and support for nonbinary individuals, echoing the importance of standing together in times of hardship.
Safe Spaces
The vigil in McAlester was particularly significant due to the murder of Dustin Parker, a transgender man, in 2020. Organizers stressed the importance of creating safe and inclusive environments for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.
All Saints Priest Janie Koch emphasized the importance of reaching out for support during difficult times, highlighting the need for compassion and vigilance in looking out for one another.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Nex Benedict’s death, the community remains hopeful for justice. Despite initial reports of a felony murder, preliminary autopsy results suggest that the altercation at the school was not directly linked to the teenager’s passing.
