Community Mourns the Loss of Nex Benedict in Oklahoma

On a somber evening in Edmond, Oklahoma, more than two dozen individuals gathered at the All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester for a vigil in honor of Nex Benedict. The nonbinary teenager tragically passed away just one day after a distressing altercation in a high school bathroom.

A Heartfelt Vigil for a Beloved Teen

The vigil, organized by the McAlester Rainbow Connection, was a poignant display of solidarity and remembrance. It was one of many vigils planned across the nation to honor the memory of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old Oklahoma student.

Nex, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, was involved in a fight at Owasso High School that ultimately led to their untimely passing. According to reports, three girls instigated the altercation after Benedict poured water on them in response to their teasing of the teen and their friends.

Seeking Justice and Support

Following the tragic incident, Matt Blancett, along with the Rainbow Connection, emphasized the importance of holding a vigil in McAlester to show support for the LGBTQ+ community. The gathering served as a reminder of the ongoing need for unity and advocacy.

As the community grapples with the loss of Nex Benedict, All Saints Priest Janie Koch highlighted the importance of reaching out and offering support to those in need during this difficult time.

Seeking Answers and Closure

In the wake of Nex’s passing, there have been calls for justice and accountability. Benedict’s mother, Sue Benedict, initially expressed a desire to press charges in the aftermath of the incident. However, the police investigation is ongoing, with authorities collecting evidence and conducting interviews to determine the full extent of what transpired.

While the circumstances surrounding Nex Benedict’s death remain under investigation, the community continues to come together to mourn and honor their memory. Additional vigils are planned in various cities across Oklahoma and beyond, serving as a testament to the lasting impact Nex had on those around them.

As the community navigates this challenging time, the outpouring of love and support for Nex Benedict serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of tragedy.
