Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragic incident in Edmond, Oklahoma

More than two dozen people gathered at All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester for a vigil in memory of Nex Benedict, a nonbinary teenager from Edmond who tragically passed away after a fight in a high school bathroom. The vigil was organized by the McAlester Rainbow Connection, and it was one of many vigils held nationwide to honor the life of the 16-year-old student.

The events leading up to the tragedy

Nex Benedict, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, got into a fight with three girls at Owasso High School after pouring water on them. In a video released by the police, Benedict explained how the altercation unfolded, leading to the tragic consequences that followed.

Following the fight, Benedict’s mother called emergency responders to their home the next day, reporting shallow breathing and other concerning symptoms. The community was left devastated by the sudden loss of this young individual.

Community support and solidarity

Matt Blancett, a member of the LGBTQ+ group Rainbow Connection, emphasized the importance of holding a vigil in McAlester to show support for the LGBTQ+ community in the wake of Benedict’s passing. The community came together to grieve and to send a message of unity and strength in the face of tragedy.

Janie Koch, a priest at All Saints, highlighted the importance of reaching out for support and looking out for one another during difficult times. The vigil served as a reminder of the power of community and solidarity in times of need.

Investigations and aftermath

Following the tragic incident, investigations were carried out at Owasso High School to gather evidence and understand the events leading to Benedict’s death. While initial reports suggested a possible link between the fight and the teenager’s passing, preliminary autopsy results have indicated otherwise.

Authorities have refrained from commenting further on the cause of Benedict’s death until toxicology and additional autopsy results are available. The community continues to seek answers and support one another during this challenging time.

Continuing remembrance and support

Additional vigils are planned in various cities across Oklahoma and in other states to remember Nex Benedict and to show support for the LGBTQ+ community. The outpouring of love and solidarity in the aftermath of this tragedy serves as a testament to the resilience and compassion of the community.

As investigations continue and the community mourns the loss of a young life, the memory of Nex Benedict will live on as a symbol of hope, unity, and the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
