Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragic Loss in Edmond, Oklahoma

More than two dozen individuals gathered at All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester, Oklahoma, for a heartfelt vigil in memory of Nex Benedict, a nonbinary teenager who tragically passed away following a physical altercation in a high school bathroom. The vigil was organized by the McAlester Rainbow Connection and was one of two held on Friday night in Oklahoma, marking the beginning of a series of vigils planned nationwide through Monday.

Remembering Nex Benedict

Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student at Owasso High School in Oklahoma, lost their life the day after an altercation in a school bathroom. Identified as nonbinary and using they/them pronouns, Benedict faced bullying over their gender identity, which ultimately led to a confrontation with three girls. The altercation reportedly began when Benedict poured water on the girls, who had been teasing them and their friends.

Community Support and Advocacy

Following the tragic loss of Nex Benedict, the LGBTQ+ community in McAlester came together to honour their memory and advocate for justice. Matt Blancett, who spearheaded the vigil with the Rainbow Connection, emphasized the importance of solidarity in the face of adversity. Blancett highlighted the significance of the vigil in McAlester, drawing parallels to the murder of transgender man Dustin Parker in 2020.

Seeking Justice and Closure

During a distressing call to emergency responders, Benedict’s mother expressed her desire to press charges in response to her child’s deteriorating condition. However, the responding officer indicated that the altercation would be considered a mutual fight due to Benedict initiating the conflict by throwing water. Despite initial intentions to pursue legal action, Benedict’s mother opted to address campus issues with school officials rather than file charges.

Investigative Efforts and Ongoing Inquiry

A police search warrant, filed two weeks after the incident, revealed the extent of the investigation into Benedict’s passing. Investigators documented the scene of the altercation in the school bathroom, collecting evidence and interviewing individuals involved. While initial speculation suggested a potential felony murder charge, preliminary autopsy results indicated that Benedict’s death was not directly linked to injuries sustained in the fight.

Unity and Nationwide Support

The outpouring of support for Nex Benedict extended beyond McAlester, with vigils planned in various cities across Oklahoma and other states. Communities nationwide have rallied in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, standing united against discrimination and violence. As investigations continue and mourners gather to honour Nex Benedict’s memory, the call for justice and accountability resonates across the country.
