Man Arrested in Killing of Nursing Student at University of Georgia Campus

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Friday in connection with the killing of a nursing student whose body was discovered on the University of Georgia campus in Athens. The suspect, identified as Athens resident Jose Antonio Ibarra, is believed to have acted alone in the crime, and authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the university community.

The victim, 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, was a student at Augusta University College of Nursing. Her body was found near running trails on the campus, sparking a thorough investigation by law enforcement. Video evidence from campus security led police to Ibarra, who resided in an apartment near the location where Riley’s body was discovered.

University of Georgia Police Chief Jeff Clark stated that the evidence gathered in the case points to Ibarra committing the crime independently, and there is no indication of a prior relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Suspect Faces Multiple Charges in Connection with the Murder

Ibarra is facing charges that include malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another. He is currently in custody and will be held at Athens-Clarke County Jail.

Authorities have not disclosed whether Ibarra has legal representation. Chief Clark mentioned that Ibarra has a limited criminal history and is not a U.S. citizen, though his immigration status has not been confirmed.

Riley’s body was found after she failed to return from a morning run, prompting a search by law enforcement. The cause of her death has been determined as blunt force trauma, with medical responders concluding that she passed away before being discovered.
