Details of the Tragic Incident

The asylum seeker, Delphina Ngigi, lost her life on Sunday, February 18, in Canada.

Reports from Toronto City News revealed that Ngigi endured hours in the freezing cold while waiting to be admitted to a shelter.

Ngigi, a widow and mother of four children back in Kenya, arrived in Canada on Thursday, February 15. She approached the Dundas Shelter at 1 pm on Saturday but was only admitted after a seven-hour wait.

Authorities confirmed Ngigi’s death, stating that she experienced a medical emergency on Sunday while at the shelter. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away. The hospital ruled out foul play in her death and did not involve the police.

Ngigi’s remains will undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her untimely death.

This tragic incident follows the death of a Nigerian refugee who also perished while sleeping in a tent outside the same shelter in November 2023.

Reactions from the Kenyan Community

News of Ngigi’s passing deeply saddened Kenyans, eliciting various reactions:

Beckie Yusuf commented, “It is a wild world. Tragic.”

Suzie Njunu questioned, “But why did they take long to get her shelter honestly?”

Min Blake expressed, “This is sad. Now her relatives have to figure out how to bring her body back home.”

Nickson Otaro speculated, “I think she paid agents and they dumped her.”

Reflections on Moving to Canada

In a separate incident, a 26-year-old man raised in Kenya who relocated to Canada with his family shared his struggles with adapting to life in the country.

Despite the financial benefits, he found the routine mundane and contemplated returning to Kenya for a more fulfilling life.

The man admitted that the constant work and lack of excitement in Canada made him reconsider his decision to stay.
