Two Men Die While Incarcerated in Santa Clara County Jails

Two tragic incidents occurred within a span of two weeks in Santa Clara County jails, resulting in the deaths of two men. The circumstances surrounding these deaths remain unclear, with authorities stating that there were no obvious signs of foul play.

First Incident at Main Jail in San Jose

The first incident took place on February 4 at the Main Jail in San Jose. A 59-year-old man named Rick Alan Giles, a resident of San Jose, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 10:28 a.m. He was pronounced dead an hour later. Giles had been booked into the jail a month earlier for an alleged parole violation.

Second Incident at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas

Thirteen days later, on February 17, a 57-year-old man passed away in an open barrack unit at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas. The man, who has not been publicly identified, was booked into jail on December 14 on suspicion of multiple counts of burglary and grand theft.

Joint Investigation Underway

The deaths of both individuals are currently under investigation by the county District Attorney and Sheriff’s offices. The authorities have not disclosed the suspected manner of either death, and the circumstances surrounding the incidents remain shrouded in mystery.
