Tragic Death of 21-Year-Old Farmer during ‘Delhi Chalo’ March

On Wednesday, a 21-year-old farmer, Subhkaran Singh, tragically lost his life during the ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. The protest was reignited as farmers expressed their disagreement with the Centre’s proposals regarding a five-year minimum support price (MSP) plan. Despite multiple rounds of talks between farmer leaders and Union ministers, no resolution was reached.

The incident took place at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border, where a clash erupted between protesting farmers and security personnel. Subhkaran, a resident of Baloke village in Punjab’s Bathinda district, succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind his father, Charanjeet Singh, who works as a school van driver, two sisters, and a grandmother.

Subhkaran, who was involved in animal husbandry and owned approximately 3 acres of land, joined the farmers at the Khanauri border on 13 February to support their 10 demands. According to reports, he had prepared breakfast for his fellow protesters on the day of the tragic incident, emphasizing the importance of unity and camaraderie.

Tragic Aftermath and Consequences

Following Subhkaran’s death, several other farmers were injured as the Haryana Police used tear gas shells to prevent breaches at barricades in Shambhu and Khanauri. The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from political leaders, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi expressing their condolences and demanding accountability.

Despite the tragic turn of events, farmer leaders have decided to temporarily halt the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march for two days in honor of Subhkaran. The protest is scheduled to resume on Friday, 23 February, as farmers continue to push for their demands, including a law on MSP, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, and justice for past incidents of violence.

Continued Struggle and Demands

Alongside the MSP issue, farmers are also advocating for pension schemes, no increase in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases against protesters, and compensation for families affected by previous agitations. The resilience and determination of the farming community remain unwavering as they seek justice and support for their livelihoods.

As the nation mourns the loss of Subhkaran Singh, the fight for farmers’ rights and fair treatment continues to resonate across the country. The sacrifices made by individuals like Subhkaran serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those working tirelessly to sustain our agricultural sector.
