The ongoing farmers’ protest took a violent turn as clashes broke out on the Punjab-Haryana border during the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. The protest, which had been temporarily halted, resumed with tragic consequences.

Violent Confrontation at Shambhu and Khanauri

As the farmers attempted to breach barricades at Shambhu and Khanauri, the Haryana Police deployed tear gas shells, resulting in a clash involving lathis and stones. A protester, Subhkaran Singh (21) from Baloke village in Punjab’s Bathinda district, lost his life after suffering a fatal head injury.

Police Personnel Injured

Approximately 12 police personnel were also injured in the clashes. The police urged owners of heavy equipment to withdraw from protest sites due to concerns over potential harm to security forces.

Farmer Leaders’ Response

In response to the tragic incident, farmer leaders decided to temporarily halt the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march for two days. Sarwan Singh Pandher, a prominent farmer leader, stated that the next course of action would be determined on Friday evening.

Government’s Call for Peace

Agriculture minister Arjun Munda, part of a three-Union minister panel engaging with farmer leaders, called for further talks and appealed for peace. The government invited farmers for the 5th round of discussions to address their demands through negotiations.

Incident in Muzaffarnagar

In a separate incident, a farmer in Muzaffarnagar attempted self-immolation near a protest site due to a loan-related issue. The farmer, Brijpal, suffered minor burn injuries and was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Protests in Ghaziabad

In Ghaziabad, farmers led by Rakesh Tikait held a sit-in and submitted a 15-point memorandum addressing various farmer issues. Tikait warned of barricading villages if the government obstructed their path to Delhi.
