Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident occurred in Owasso, Oklahoma, where a 16-year-old high school student, Nex Benedict, passed away a day after an altercation in a school restroom. The altercation, which may have been prompted by bullying over gender identity, has left the community in shock.

Investigation Into the Incident

Police in Owasso are currently investigating the death of Nex Benedict. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that the teen did not die as a result of injuries sustained in the fight. Although the cause of death has not been determined, toxicology results and other testing are pending.

Nex Benedict identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns. Their family has reported that there had been harassment due to the teen’s nonbinary identity. Detectives are interviewing staff and students at the school to gather more information about the incident.

Fight in the Restroom

The altercation took place on February 7th, where Nex Benedict and a transgender student were involved in a fight with three older girls in a school restroom. Benedict was able to walk out of the bathroom after the fight but was later taken to the hospital by their family. The next day, paramedics were called to their home for a medical emergency, and Benedict was taken to the hospital where they later passed away.

Nex Benedict’s mother, Sue Benedict, described the extent of the injuries suffered by the teen, including bruises on their face and eyes. The family is still learning to use Nex’s preferred name and pronouns and has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.

Community Response

Governor Kevin Stitt expressed his condolences to Nex Benedict’s family and the Owasso community. He emphasized the importance of holding bullies accountable and ensuring the safety of all students in Oklahoma schools.

Oklahoma has faced scrutiny for passing laws that target transgender and nonbinary individuals, including bills that restrict gender-affirming medical care and prevent the use of nonbinary gender markers on birth certificates. The Superintendent of Public Schools, Ryan Walters, has also faced criticism for embracing anti-trans policies.

Final Thoughts

The loss of Nex Benedict has deeply impacted their family, classmates, and the entire community of Owasso. As investigations continue and more details unfold, it is essential to reflect on the need for inclusivity and acceptance in our schools and society.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Nex Benedict during this difficult time.
