Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragic Incident in Moreno Valley

A convicted felon, Savanna Michelle Carlos, 21, of Moreno Valley, is facing second-degree murder charges after allegedly providing a deadly dose of fentanyl to 27-year-old Jesse Jimenez, resulting in his untimely death. The incident took place at a residence in the 21600 block of Winding Road, near Yolo Street, in Moreno Valley.

Legal Proceedings

Carlos pleaded not guilty during her arraignment in December and is currently being held in lieu of $1 million at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. She is scheduled for a settlement conference before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gail O’Rane on March 12 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

Investigation Details

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Sean Liebrand, on February 2, 2023, patrol deputies responded to reports of a man down at the residence where Jimenez was found unconscious and unresponsive. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Jimenez was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s bureau later determined that fentanyl poisoning was the cause of death.

Previous Conviction

Carlos has a prior conviction in Riverside County for forgery, adding a layer of complexity to the current case. The circumstances surrounding how Carlos came into contact with Jimenez and provided him with the lethal dose of fentanyl have not been disclosed.

Fentanyl Epidemic

Since February 2021, more than two dozen individuals in Riverside County have been charged with murder in connection to fentanyl-related deaths. Fentanyl, a highly potent opioid, is often mixed into other substances, making it difficult for users to know what they are consuming. The drug is a leading cause of death for Americans between 18 and 45 years old.

County Statistics

Preliminary data from the county Department of Public Health revealed that there were 388 confirmed fentanyl-related fatalities in 2023, marking a 23% decline from the previous year. Law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on the distribution and sale of fentanyl, but the battle against this deadly drug is far from over.
