Accident – Death – Obituary News : Mulch containing asbestos has been discovered at a residential complex in Canberra, as reported by WorkSafe ACT. This finding is part of a larger issue, with 29 sites across the territory potentially containing bonded asbestos, one of which has approximately 70 cubic metres of the harmful material. WorkSafe ACT has already identified 10 businesses that may be impacted by this situation, with more assessments ongoing.

The contaminated mulch found at the residential complex is just one-fifth of the total material confirmed to be in the ACT. WorkSafe ACT has issued a prohibition order at the site to prevent any disturbance, handling, or disposal of the mulch until further testing can be completed. In total, 20 verbal prohibition orders have been issued at various sites in the ACT, while nine other sites are still being contacted.

It has been revealed that approximately 50 cubic metres of affected mulch were purchased in small quantities and have entered the ACT from a company in Sydney. This contamination has been found at more than 40 sites across Sydney as well. WorkSafe ACT has urged individuals who have purchased “cottage mulch” products between March 1, 2023, and February 19, 2024, not to distribute or disturb the material and to contact them immediately for guidance.

It is important to note that the contamination is not loose-fill asbestos, like that found in Mr Fluffy homes, which poses a significant health risk. Instead, the contamination is believed to be bonded asbestos, where fibres are mixed with cement or resin to keep them in place. Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius emphasized the importance of keeping the mulch undisturbed on the ground for safety reasons.

Stonehenge Beltana, a landscaping company in Piallago, is one of the 10 businesses identified as potentially impacted by the issue. General manager Jack Amey expressed surprise upon learning of the contamination, describing it as a “major kick in the guts.” The company has taken immediate action to block off the affected area and is working to contact customers who may have purchased the mulch.

As the investigation continues, WorkSafe ACT has announced that an ACT Environment Protection Authority taskforce will join their inspectors to ensure all sites are thoroughly visited and assessed. The community and businesses affected by this incident are encouraged to cooperate with authorities and follow safety guidelines to protect the well-being of all Canberrans..
