Arrests Made in Connection with Interception of Suspected Iranian-Made Weapons

On Thursday, a group of foreign nationals was apprehended in relation to the transportation of suspected Iranian-made weapons on a vessel that was intercepted by the United States Navy. The incident took place last month during a raid in the Arabian Sea near Somalia.

Tragic Loss of Two U.S. Navy SEALs

During the operation, tragedy struck as two U.S. Navy SEALs lost their lives. Special Operator First Class Christopher J. Chambers, 37, and Special Operator Second Class Nathan Gage Ingram, 27, were declared dead by the U.S. Navy after a 10-day search. The SEALs were involved in the raid that led to the interception of the suspected weapons.

Charges and Identification of the Suspects

The four individuals charged in connection with the incident have been identified as Muhammad Pahlawan, Mohammad Mazhar, Ghufran Ullah, and Izhar Muhammad. Pahlawan faces charges of attempting to smuggle advanced missile components, while Mazhar, Ullah, and Muhammad have been charged with providing false information during the investigation.

Legal Consequences and Response

The Justice Department has stated that Pahlawan could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of unlawfully transporting a warhead. The other suspects could face up to five years in prison for providing false information. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland expressed condolences to the families of the fallen Navy SEALs and emphasized the importance of holding those accountable who facilitate the flow of weapons that pose a threat to the United States and its allies.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen highlighted the efforts of the Justice Department and its partners in combating threats to international shipping and the safety of military personnel. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the grave threat posed by the flow of missiles and weapons from Iran to Houthi rebel forces.
