Tragic Shooting Incident in Burnsville, Minnesota
In Burnsville, Minnesota, a tragic shooting incident occurred that left two police officers and a firefighter-paramedic dead. The incident took place at a home located at 12605 33rd Ave. The events unfolded on February 18 when officers responded to a domestic situation that quickly escalated.
The suspect, identified as Shannon Gooden, opened fire on the responding officers, resulting in the deaths of Burnsville Police Officer Paul Elmstrand, Officer Matthew Ruge, and Firefighter-Paramedic Adam Finseth. Another officer, Burnsville Police Sgt. Adam Medlicott, was also injured during the shooting.
Search Warrant Reveals Details
A search warrant filed in Ramsey County provided insight into the events leading up to the tragic shooting. Police were initially called to the home following a report of a sexual assault allegation. Upon arrival, they made contact with the individual who reported the allegation and with Gooden, who then retreated into a bedroom and barricaded himself.
Despite attempts to negotiate with Gooden to surrender, he did not cooperate. Subsequently, Gooden opened fire on the officers with multiple firearms, resulting in the fatal shootings of Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth.
Tragic End to the Standoff
Special Weapons and Tactics Officers were called to the scene, and a drone was utilized to locate Gooden, who was found dead in the bedroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death.
Despite the tragic events that unfolded, the seven children present in the home at the time of the shooting were unharmed. The biological mother of three of the children was identified as Noemi Torres, who was in communication with Gooden’s girlfriend during or after the incident.
Continuing Investigation
Investigators have taken Torres’ cell phone into evidence to examine communication between her and Gooden. The goal is to gain further insight into Gooden’s mindset leading up to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
