On a fateful evening in Largo, Maryland, tragedy struck as a man lost his life while in police custody. The incident took place on Feb. 16 at around 7:45 p.m. in the 10700 block of Lake Arbor Way. What started as a report of a suspicious person knocking on doors of homes quickly escalated into a heartbreaking turn of events.

Police Respond to a Disturbance

Officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department rushed to the scene after receiving a 911 call. Upon arrival, they encountered a man in the road who then moved onto a nearby lawn and laid down. Concerned for his well-being, the officers called for an ambulance to provide assistance. However, as two more officers arrived on the scene, the situation took a drastic turn.

Tragic Turn of Events

The man, whose identity has been revealed as 61-year-old Joseph Holmes of Clinton, was placed in handcuffs by the officers for transport to a hospital for evaluation. Unfortunately, during this process, the man went into medical distress, prompting officers to provide emergency aid. Despite the best efforts of the officers and medics on the scene, the man was pronounced dead shortly after.

Investigation Underway

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Holmes’ death. The officers involved in the incident, Corporal Alyssa Tomaselli, Corporal Mark Price, and Officer Marvin Marks, are all veterans of the force with years of experience. Additionally, Officer Andre Brooks of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Police Department was also present at the scene.

As the investigation unfolds, the IID will review body-worn camera footage from the officers present, providing crucial evidence in determining the events that transpired. The community awaits answers and justice for the untimely loss of Joseph Holmes.
