Florida K-9 Deputy in Critical Condition After Shooting

Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) K-9 deputy, Leo, is fighting for his life after being shot by a suspect in Ocala, Florida on February 17. The incident occurred when deputies responded to a disturbance call in Silver Springs over the weekend.

Leo’s Current Condition

Lieutenant Paul Bloom of MCSO provided an update on Leo’s condition, stating that the K-9 deputy’s vitals are stable. Leo underwent an MRI on Monday evening to assess the extent of his injuries. The brave dog is receiving the best possible treatment, but the road to recovery remains uncertain.

The Shooting Incident

Leo was shot by a suspect, Jeremy Bradsher, who opened fire on deputies. Despite wearing a bulletproof vest, Leo was hit in an unprotected area while courageously carrying out his duty to protect and serve. Deputies returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Rapid Response and Medical Care

Leo was swiftly transported to the University of Florida’s Veterinary Hospital, thanks to a new law that allows ambulances to transport injured law enforcement K-9s. Ocala and Gainesville police officers, along with Florida Highway Patrol troopers, assisted in clearing traffic to expedite Leo’s journey to the hospital.

Community Support and Donation

A generous private donor has pledged to cover Leo’s medical expenses, highlighting the community’s support for the brave K-9 deputy. Those who wish to contribute to the MCSO K9 unit, which consists of Leo and seven other K-9 deputies, can visit the donation website provided.

Leo’s Dedication to Service

Leo has been a valued member of the MCSO for three years, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and dedication to his duties. If Leo pulls through, he will retire early and spend his remaining days with his deputy handler, embodying the strong bond between K-9 deputies and their human partners.

Incidents like these serve as a sobering reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers, including K-9 deputies, face every day as they work to protect their communities. The outpouring of support for Leo reflects the deep appreciation and respect for these courageous animals and their handlers.
