CHESTER Police Chase Ends in Tragedy

In a recent incident in Chester, Pennsylvania, a suspect was shot and killed during a police chase and officer-involved shooting. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Torraize Armstrong, was involved in a drive-by shooting that led to a dramatic pursuit.

The incident began on a Saturday morning when police received reports of a drive-by shooting in Chester. Detective Steve Byrnes, a 16-year veteran of the Chester police force, was off-duty but came in to assist with the investigation. Later in the day, Byrnes spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s car.

When Byrnes attempted to stop the vehicle, a police pursuit ensued. The chase came to a dramatic end on West 14th Street and Arbor Drive in Chester, where the suspect crashed his car. Armstrong then exited the vehicle and began firing at officers, striking Byrnes in the side before officers returned fire.

District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer confirmed that Armstrong was fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire and was pronounced dead at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Byrnes, who was wearing a tactical vest, was also shot but only sustained a single bullet wound to his side, which was not covered by the vest.

Police Chief Steven Gretsky provided an update on Byrnes’ condition, stating that the officer had been released from the hospital and was recovering at home with his family. Authorities also confirmed that the gun used by Armstrong in the shooting was the same weapon used in the earlier drive-by incident.

This incident marks the third shooting of an officer in Delaware County within a two-week period, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
