In a tragic turn of events, emergency crews responded to a devastating house explosion in Sterling, Virginia, on Friday night. The incident resulted in the loss of a firefighter’s life and left several others injured. The firefighter who tragically lost his life was identified as 45-year-old Trevor Brown.
Initial Response and Explosion
Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR) received a call about the smell of gas outside a home in Sterling. Upon arrival, members of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company discovered a 500-gallon underground propane tank leaking gas. The Hazardous Materials Response Team was called to the scene, along with additional units from Sterling, South Riding, and other command staff.
A short time later, a catastrophic explosion occurred, coinciding with mayday calls from firefighters who were inside the home. Crews immediately called for a Rapid Intervention Task Force and a second alarm, prompting additional units from Fairfax County and the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority to respond.
Rescue Efforts and Injuries
Fire and rescue teams worked tirelessly to locate and extract trapped firefighters from the debris caused by the explosion. Tragically, Trevor Brown succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Ten other firefighters and two civilians with non-life-threatening injuries were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office is actively investigating the source and cause of the explosion to determine what led to this tragic event.
