Police early yesterday apprehended the driver and assistant of a bus from Jhenaigati, Sherpur, following a fatal road accident in Mymensingh Sadar upazila on Friday morning. The tragic incident resulted in the loss of seven lives.

The individuals taken into custody were identified as Sirajul Islam, 45, the driver of the Adil Sarker Paribahan bus, and its supervisor Jafor Miya Jony, 42, hailing from Sherpur town.

Arrest Made

Basir Ahmed Badal, the officer-in-charge of Jhenaigati Police Station, disclosed that a police team conducted a search in the district and managed to detain the pair from the Bandhabhatpara area of the Sadar union in the upazila around midnight.

Shortly thereafter, the suspects were transferred to Kotwali Model Police Station in Mymensingh for further processing.

Court Proceedings

Following an interrogation at the police station, the individuals were presented before a Mymensingh court and subsequently remanded to jail, according to Md Anwar Hossain, the officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kotwali Model Police Station.

It was noted by the OC that the driver was unable to produce a valid license during the course of the investigation.

On-Going Investigation

While the authorities were unable to promptly verify the bus’s registration and fitness certificates, the matter is currently under thorough investigation, as stated by the OC.

Tragic Accident Details

The tragic incident unfolded in the Alalpur area of Mymensingh Sadar upazila, where a bus collided head-on with a CNG-operated autorickshaw on the Mymensingh-Sherpur Highway around 11:00 am.

Among the casualties were a family of three—a couple alongside their eight-year-old son—who were en route to a relative’s funeral.

Initially, the bus was impounded by the police, but the driver and supervisor managed to flee the scene.
