KANSAS CITY — A tragic incident unfolded in Kansas City during the early hours of February 12, 2024, when a fatal shooting took place at the intersection of 50th and Bellefontaine Avenue. Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker has charged Charlie L Bowman, a 56-year-old Kansas City resident, with Murder in the 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
According to court records, officers from the Kansas City Police Department swiftly responded to the scene following reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, the victim, identified as 57-year-old Ruth A. Bowman, tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities investigating the incident determined that Charlie L Bowman was present at the scene and remained there until the arrival of law enforcement officers. Video footage obtained from the area reveals that a vehicle arrived, followed closely by another vehicle. Ruth A. Bowman exited the second vehicle and approached the driver’s door of the first vehicle, a Buick. A witness recounted that the victim engaged in a confrontation with the defendant before he shot her twice. In a desperate attempt to escape, Ruth A. Bowman collapsed on the sidewalk.

Following the shooting, police captain Jake Becchina provided further details about the incident. Emergency services were alerted to the scene at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday. Responding officers discovered Ruth A. Bowman unresponsive on the sidewalk north of the 50th and Bellefontaine intersection. Immediate medical assistance was provided, but unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel.
Upon their arrival, officers detained two individuals present at the scene for further investigation. Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators meticulously combed the area for evidence and sought out potential witnesses who could provide valuable information regarding the incident. At present, no arrests have been made, and the police have not released any additional details.
