12 People Killed in Portland Traffic Crashes in 2024

According to the latest report by the Portland Police Department, 12 people have tragically lost their lives in traffic crashes in Portland this year. In an effort to raise awareness and honor the victims, the police have released the names of six of the deceased individuals.

Comparing the data to the same time last year, the statistics reveal a concerning increase in traffic-related fatalities. By this point in 2023, six individuals had lost their lives in traffic crashes. The year 2023 saw a total of 75 traffic deaths in Portland, marking it as the highest number of fatalities since 1986.

Over the past three weeks, the following incidents have occurred on Portland roadways:

Jan. 24 – North Rosa Parks Way

Pedro Sanchez-Machic, 41, tragically lost his life in the early morning hours of Jan. 24 in North Portland. According to the police, a single-vehicle crash occurred in the 1900 block of North Rosa Parks Way at 4:32 a.m. Sanchez-Machic was found dead at the scene.

Further details regarding the cause of the crash have not been released by the authorities.

Jan. 26 – Northeast Lombard and Bryant Street

A two-car collision took place in Northeast Portland on Jan. 26, resulting in the hospitalization of Charles Preisch, 74. Sadly, Preisch passed away three days later. The incident occurred at the intersection of Northeast Lombard Street and Bryant Street at approximately 3:15 p.m.

The crash involved a 2014 Toyota Prius, driven by Preisch, which was initially stopped on the side of Lombard Street. As Preisch pulled out into the road, another Prius collided with his vehicle, according to the police.

Jan. 27 – Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway

On Jan. 27, a fatal crash occurred on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway near 56th Avenue at 5:32 p.m. The victim, 60-year-old Floyd William Charlan Jr., was a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a motorist.

Further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash has not been provided by the authorities.

Feb. 5 – Southeast 82nd and Flavel Street

Edward Hanson, 44, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident in Southeast Portland on Feb. 5. The crash occurred at the intersection of Southeast 82nd and Flavel Street at 2:17 a.m.

The driver responsible for the collision fled the scene before the arrival of the police. However, 26-year-old Skyler Lee-Stiles was later identified as the driver and now faces various charges, including second-degree manslaughter and reckless endangerment.

Feb. 10 – North Marine Drive

A tragic incident occurred on Feb. 10 at 11:02 p.m., resulting in the deaths of 18-year-old Cristian Perez Hernandez and 16-year-old Gabriel Sanchez. The two-car crash took place at the intersection of North Marine Drive and Leadbetter Road.

The authorities suspect that the crash was a result of street racing activities.
