30-Year-Old Man Allegedly Fatally Stabs Mother in Altoona

In a tragic incident that shook the quiet town of Altoona, Pennsylvania, a 30-year-old man remains hospitalized after allegedly fatally stabbing his 61-year-old mother during an argument. The shocking incident took place on Wednesday, Feb. 14, sending shockwaves through the community.

Incident at Pittsburgh International Airport

Shortly before 8 a.m. on that fateful day, Allegheny County Police Department officers were dispatched to the Pittsburgh International Airport in response to a man who had jumped from the second floor of a parking garage. The man, later identified as Joshua Leyo, could not be located initially, but he later called from a stairwell in the garage seeking medical care. He was then located and transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Tragic Discovery at Home

Later that same day, shortly after 1:40 p.m., officers from the Altoona Police Department responded to a home in the 200 block of East Maple Avenue. There, they made a heartbreaking discovery – Maureen Mazenko, the 61-year-old mother of Leyo, was found dead in the living room with a stab wound to the neck. Leyo, who lived with his mother prior to the incident, was nowhere to be found at the scene.

Details of the Investigation

Further investigation revealed that Leyo had allegedly used his mother’s bank account and taken an Uber to Pittsburgh, along with making other purchases. Additionally, it was discovered that Leyo had sought treatment for a hand laceration at the emergency room the day before the fatal stabbing. Allegheny County Police informed Altoona Police that Leyo had sustained serious injuries after jumping from the parking garage and was being treated at Allegheny General Hospital.

Confession and Arrest

During questioning by officers from both police departments, Leyo confessed to the heinous crime, stating that he had engaged in a verbal argument with his mother and ultimately stabbed her in the neck. After committing the act, Leyo fled the home, believing his mother to be dead. He is currently in police custody at the hospital and will face charges of first-degree murder upon his release, with plans for extradition back to Blair County for arraignment.

The community of Altoona is left reeling from this shocking turn of events, as they come to terms with the loss of a beloved member of their community. The investigation into this tragic incident continues as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
