Winona, MN Coach and Teacher Accused of Sexual Assault

Winona, MN (KROC-AM News)- A southeast Minnesota coach and teacher is facing serious allegations of sexually assaulting three female students. The shocking incident came to light after a criminal complaint was filed in Winona County Court, leading to the arrest and arraignment of the accused, 29-year-old Eric Dione Birth, on a felony criminal sexual conduct charge.

The investigation began in June when the Winona Police Department received an anonymous tip about Birth’s inappropriate relationship with a former student athlete. The victim initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming Birth was simply her coach. However, seven months later, she admitted to lying and revealed the true nature of their relationship.

The victim disclosed that Birth had initiated a sexual relationship during her senior year in school. She mentioned a Snapchat group chat where Birth shared his personal phone number with her, leading to private conversations and eventually a physical encounter in April 2023.

Another former track team member came forward, recounting a similar experience with Birth during her junior year of high school. She detailed a sexual relationship that took place in 2016 and ended later that year.

A third victim also stepped forward, alleging a sexual relationship with Birth in 2017. Two other former team members confirmed the relationship after discovering a compromising video on Birth’s phone.

Following his arrest, Birth was placed on administrative leave by the Winona Area Public Schools, where he had been a track coach since 2016 and a physical education teacher since 2021. He faces one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct-position of authority, with a conditional bail set at $100,000.

Winona Area Public Schools Superintendent, Brad Berzinski, addressed the incident in a letter to district families, emphasizing the school’s commitment to student safety and encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, resources are available for help through organizations like RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) at 800-656-HOPE (800-656-4673).
