Accident – Death – Obituary News : Traffic Stops in Lane County Result in Multiple Arrests

EUGENE, Ore. – Recent traffic stops for suspected impaired driving by Lane County sheriff’s deputies have led to two arrests and additional charges for the drivers involved, according to authorities.

Driver Flees on Foot in Franklin Boulevard Incident

Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) officials reported that on the evening of February 15, a deputy attempted to pull over a motorist in the 4500 block of Franklin Boulevard. Instead of stopping, the driver entered an RV park and fled on foot. Eugene and Springfield police were called for assistance, and together, they established a perimeter. Within less than 10 minutes, a K9 unit was dispatched and located the suspect, identified as Cody Wallace Hanstad of Springfield. Hanstad, who appeared to be intoxicated, was arrested without further incident.

Hanstad has been transported to the Lane County Jail, where he is facing charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude by foot, and misdemeanor driving while suspended. As of February 16, 2024, Hanstad remains in custody, according to jail records.

Eugene Man Arrested after Providing False Name and Weapons Discovery

In a separate incident on February 10, an Eugene man, identified as Brandon Allen Hopkins, was pulled over in downtown Eugene. LCSO officials stated that Hopkins showed signs of impairment, leading the deputy to suspect him of driving under the influence. As the deputy conducted a search of Hopkins’ vehicle, a gun and methamphetamine were found. However, before Hopkins could be transported to the jail, he complained of medical issues and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

While Hopkins was awaiting clearance from the hospital, a shooting victim and witnesses arrived, requiring immediate attention from the deputy. After the clearance was given, Hopkins was cited and released instead of being taken into custody. He faces charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence of intoxicants, misdemeanor unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor driving while suspended.

The incidents highlight the dedication and swift actions of Lane County sheriff’s deputies in ensuring public safety and apprehending individuals suspected of impaired driving. The cooperation between law enforcement agencies played a crucial role in successfully resolving these cases.
