Crash in Concordia Neighborhood Claims Life of Portland Man

Portland, OR – On Friday, January 26, 2024, tragedy struck in the Concordia Neighborhood when a major crash occurred at the intersection of Northeast Lombard Street and Northeast Bryant Street. The collision involved two vehicles traveling westbound, resulting in the death of one driver.

The initial investigation conducted by North Precinct officers revealed that a 2014 Toyota Prius had been stopped on the side of the road before pulling out into the path of a 2017 Toyota Prius. The driver of the 2014 Prius, identified as Charles E. Preisch, 74, of Portland, was transported to a local hospital with what were initially believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. However, tragically, the Medical Examiner has since informed the Traffic Investigations Unit that Preisch passed away on January 29, 2024.

The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash remained uninjured and cooperated with authorities at the scene. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The Portland Police Bureau is urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward and contact them via email at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov, addressing their message to the Traffic Investigations Unit and referencing case number 24-20126.

This devastating incident marks the fifth traffic-related fatality in Portland this year, bringing the year-to-date total to 12. It’s important to note that this figure may be higher than the number of fatal crashes reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, incidents on private property or non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events, and deaths occurring more than 30 days after a crash.
