KWANIA – Two people have tragically lost their lives and several others have been severely injured in a devastating road accident along the Apac-Lira Highway.

According to Mathias Mulumba Okwir, the North Kyoga Regional Traffic Officer, the accident occurred at around 5:45 am on Friday when a Fuso truck carrying maize grain lost control.

“Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the truck, which was transporting maize from Iwal trading center in Atongtidi Sub County to Lira City, lost control in a swamp at Alebe village, Aboko parish in Aduku Sub County. The driver failed to brake, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives,” explained Okwir.

The ill-fated vehicle was occupied by eleven individuals, including the unidentified driver. The deceased have been identified as Ceasar, a Rwandan national, and Walter Omara from Inomo Sub County in Kwania district.

Among the injured are Ivan Okori and Emma, both rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Apac General Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The wreckage of the truck is currently being held at Kwania Central Police Station pending inspection by authorities.

Eye-witness Accounts

Jasper Alado, one of the survivors who was on the same truck, attributed the accident to mechanical failure and the driver’s negligence. He stated, “We managed to escape through the windscreen. The headlamp had been malfunctioning, and despite the persistent issue, it was never repaired. The driver was driving recklessly, which may have caused the accident.”

The North Kyoga Region, which encompasses Apac, Kole, Dokolo, Oyam, Alebtong, Otuke, Amolatar, Kwania, Apac Municipality, Lira District, and Lira City, has been witnessing a concerning rise in road accidents.

According to the Annual Traffic and Road Safety Report of 2019, North Kyoga recorded a total of 441 accidents, including 154 fatal accidents, 213 serious accidents, and 74 minor accidents.
