On a fateful evening in Edinburg, Texas, tragedy struck as a man was fatally shot by deputies after allegedly threatening his wife and lunging at officers with a knife. The incident unfolded on June 11, 2024, at 6:24 p.m. when the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office received a distressing 911 call from a woman reporting that her father-in-law had stabbed her mother-in-law. Deputies rushed to the scene in the rural area of Edinburg to handle the escalating situation.

Confrontation Escalates

Upon arrival at the 6600 block of West Drive, deputies were met with a tense standoff as they encountered a man brandishing a knife and refusing to comply with commands to drop the weapon. Despite their efforts to subdue the suspect using a Taser and non-lethal rubber shotgun rounds, the man persisted in his resistance. The situation took a deadly turn when the suspect lunged at the deputies and hurled the knife in their direction, prompting the officers to use their firearms, resulting in his tragic demise.

Victim identified

The deceased was identified as 51-year-old Ruben Ollarzabal Chairez, a resident of Edinburg, Texas. Family members confirmed that Chairez had a history of threatening behaviour towards his wife and had a previous family violence arrest in February 2024. The tragic incident has left a deep impact on the community, with loved ones grappling with the loss of a family member.

Investigation Underway

Justice of the Peace Andre Maldonado officially pronounced Chairez’s time of death at 7:00 p.m., with an autopsy subsequently ordered to determine the exact cause of death. In response to the incident, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an internal investigation, placing all five deputies involved on paid administrative leave. The Officer-Involved Shooting Team, along with Major Crime Investigators and Crime Scene Specialists, meticulously processed the scene for further evidence.
