The Events Leading Up to the Shooting

The shooting occurred at the Royal Albert’s Palace hotel in Woodbridge as authorities were searching for Gregory, who was a suspect in a fatal shooting in New York City. Investigators from the New York City Police Department had been searching for Gregory when an Automatic License Plate Reader identified his car in the area near the hotel.

Police from Edison and Woodbridge responded to the hotel and found Gregory’s car unoccupied in the parking lot. The NYPD was then notified and responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. At around 12:21 a.m. on Thursday, officers were in the lobby of the hotel when Gregory exited an elevator holding multiple bags.

The Exchange of Gunfire

According to preliminary reports, Gregory dropped the bags and reached into a black backpack, prompting an exchange of gunfire between him and the officers. During the exchange, Nerney, Mauro, and Gregory were all struck by gunfire. Despite receiving immediate medical aid, Gregory was declared dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered near his body, and multiple shell casings were found at the scene.

Nerney and Mauro sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital in New Brunswick for treatment. Mauro was released on Thursday, while Nerney was released on Friday. The incident remains under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office in accordance with a law that mandates investigations into civilian deaths during interactions with law enforcement.
