The brutal murder of 27-year-old Rasila Raju O P sent shockwaves across the nation in January 2017. Working as a systems engineer at Infosys in Hinjewadi, Pune, Rasila was a native of Kozhikode in Kerala. The Investigation and Arrest
The investigation into Rasila’s murder quickly led to the arrest of a security guard, Bhaben Bharali Saikia, who was seen on CCTV footage entering the office after Rasila on the day of the murder. Saikia, then 26 years old, was apprehended by the police in Mumbai as he attempted to flee to his hometown in Assam.
Rasila’s colleague, Abhijit Kothari, filed the FIR for the murder at the Hinjewadi police station. The tragic incident raised serious questions about the safety of women in workplaces, prompting discussions about security measures at Infosys and other companies.
The Details of the Crime
It was revealed that Rasila had been working alone on the ninth floor of the building on the fateful Sunday. Saikia allegedly made unwanted advances towards her, leading to a confrontation between the two. The altercation turned violent, with Saikia allegedly hitting Rasila in the face and strangling her with a network cable.
After committing the heinous act, Saikia attempted to take his own life but was stopped by another guard on the terrace. He then confessed to his mother before trying to flee, only to be apprehended by the police in Mumbai.

Questions Raised and Actions Taken
IPS officer Rashmi Shukla, who was the commissioner of Pune city police at the time, raised concerns about the security arrangements at the Infosys campus. She questioned why Rasila was working alone on a Sunday and highlighted the need for real-time monitoring of CCTV footage.
In response to the tragedy, Infosys released a statement expressing condolences and outlining security initiatives being implemented at their campuses. The Hinjewadi Industries Association also reviewed security arrangements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Legal Proceedings and Family’s Demands
In February 2017, Infosys provided a compensation of Rs 1 crore to Rasila’s family. The prosecution filed charges against Saikia in April 2017, and he was formally charged with murder and destruction of evidence in March 2019.
Saikia’s lawyer claimed his client was framed in the case, citing issues related to Rasila’s transfer to another location. However, police officials maintained that there was solid evidence against the accused.
