The India Meteorological Department (IMD) provided updates on Cyclone Remal, stating that it has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and is expected to further diminish in intensity throughout Monday. The cyclone made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, causing widespread devastation in its wake.

Torrential rains accompanied by strong winds lashed Kolkata on Sunday night, leading to the uprooting of trees, damage to electricity poles, and blockage of roads. The city experienced heavy rainfall, with 144 mm recorded in just one night. The adverse weather conditions disrupted transportation services, with train operations cancelled in many areas and flight services at the Kolkata airport suspended temporarily.

Metro services also faced challenges due to waterlogging on tracks, resulting in truncated services between certain stations. Municipal authorities and disaster management teams are working tirelessly to clear debris, remove fallen trees, and restore normalcy to the city amidst the aftermath of the cyclone.

A red alert has been issued for Murshidabad and Nadia districts, with expectations of significant rainfall. Additionally, eight districts, including Kolkata, are likely to experience thundershowers and gusty winds. The Met office warned of potential wind gusts reaching 50-60 kmph in these areas.

Continuous rain is forecasted for Kolkata on Monday, with storm speeds reaching 60-70 kmph and gusty winds up to 80 kmph. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in neighbouring districts, with wind gusts of up to 60 kmph expected. As Cyclone Remal gradually moves northeast, the intensity of the rain is projected to decrease.

IMD’s latest update on Cyclone Remal indicated that it has weakened into a cyclonic storm and is currently centred over coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh. Gale wind speeds are expected to decrease gradually, transitioning into squally winds. The system is predicted to move north-northeastwards and then northeastwards while further weakening.

In Kolkata, a generally cloudy sky is expected with rain and thundershowers, accompanied by strong gusty winds. The maximum and minimum temperatures are projected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, residents are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on the latest weather forecasts. The resilience of the community is being tested in the face of this natural disaster, with efforts underway to mitigate the impact and restore normalcy to the affected areas..
