In a disturbing turn of events, a panchayat-level Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader named Sheikh Maibul was reportedly murdered on Friday night in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal. The incident occurred just hours before the polling for the eight Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.

Identification and Allegations
According to police reports, Maibul, a prominent local TMC leader from the Mahishadal area, fell victim to a brutal attack with sharp weapons. The authorities have since identified the deceased and launched an investigation into the matter. It was revealed that five individuals have been detained in connection with the crime.
The TMC has alleged that Maibul’s killing was orchestrated by individuals affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This tragic incident marks the second violent occurrence in the region within a span of 72 hours.
Escalating Tensions and Accusations
Prior to Maibul’s murder, a BJP woman worker named Rathibala Ari was also reportedly killed in Nanidgram, Tamluk, leading to widespread protests and unrest. Both political parties have exchanged accusations of voter intimidation, violence against booth agents, and disruptive tactics.
Debangshu Bhattacharya, a TMC candidate in Tamluk, highlighted the abduction of two agents and the coercion of voters by BJP supporters. He further claimed that essential documents, such as EPIC cards, were unlawfully seized, impeding the electoral process.

As the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections commenced on Saturday morning, tensions remained high in the East Midnapore region. The eight Lok Sabha seats under scrutiny included Tamluk, Kanthi, Ghatal, Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, and Bishnupur.
Initial reports indicated a voter turnout of 16.5% across the districts, with Tamluk recording the highest participation at 19% and Purulia registering the lowest at 12.3%. However, concerns regarding voter suppression and irregularities persisted throughout the polling process.
Challenges and Confrontations
Hiran Chatterjee, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Ghatal, expressed frustration over the alleged inaction of central forces and accused the TMC of obstructing their party’s agents from accessing polling booths.
