In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Channagiri town of Davanagere district, a man named Adil (33) from Tippunagar lost his life in police custody on Friday night. The family of the deceased has alleged that Adil died as a result of police brutality, sparking outrage and chaos in the town.

Chaos Erupts at Police Station
According to reports, Adil was arrested on charges of involvement in gambling and taken to the police station for questioning. However, while in custody, he suffered from fits and low blood pressure, leading to his untimely death. The news of Adil’s demise spread like wildfire, prompting his relatives to gather outside the police station in protest. The situation quickly escalated as a group of people stormed into the station, causing damage to property and injuring several police personnel.
Police Use Tear Gas to Disperse Crowd
As tensions mounted outside the police station, authorities were forced to use tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd. The chaos continued for several hours, with additional police reinforcements from neighbouring districts Chitradurga and Shivamogga being called in to restore order. In the aftermath of the incident, seven vehicles were damaged, and 11 police officers sustained injuries.
Investigation Launched Into Allegations
Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth addressed the media, stating that Adil’s death was due to health complications and not as a result of police misconduct. However, in response to the family’s allegations of a “lock-up death,” a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding Adil’s passing. Adil’s father, Khaleem Ulla, has filed a formal complaint, and an autopsy will be performed in the presence of a Magistrate to ascertain the cause of death.
Officials Suspended Pending Inquiry
In a swift response to the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered the suspension of Deputy Superintendent of Police Prashanth Manavalli and Police Inspector Niranjan.
