The suspect has been identified as Jonathan Andrew Stewart, a 24-year-old Miami resident. According to an arrest report, Stewart entered the store wearing a black hoodie pulled over his head. He was seen holding a toothbrush which he did not pay for before leaving the store.

The employee attempted to chase after him, leading to a struggle where Stewart dropped the stolen items before jumping into the nearby canal.
Efforts to Apprehend the Suspect
Deputies attempted to coax Stewart out of the water, but he resisted and claimed he wanted to die. Eventually, a BSO dive team was called in to retrieve him from the canal. Stewart was wrapped in a blanket or towel and carried into a police cruiser.
