The Scam
It all started with a phone call that seemed innocent enough. On May 11, Dr. Karjagi received a call from a man claiming to be Dikshit Gidam, a CBI officer from Mumbai. The imposter informed the doctor that a fraudulent bank account had been opened in his name by someone named Naresh Goyal, and it was being used for criminal activities.
Under the guise of investigating the matter, the fraudster proceeded to request the doctor’s Adhaar details and the amount of money in his account. To Dr. Karjagi’s horror, the imposter threatened him with legal consequences unless he transferred a substantial sum of money to them. The doctor, trusting the supposed CBI officer, complied and transferred a total of Rs 3.71 crore to multiple bank accounts as instructed.
The Aftermath
It wasn’t until May 17 that Dr. Karjagi realized he had fallen victim to a sophisticated scam. Feeling betrayed and helpless, he decided to take action and filed a police complaint on May 18. The cyber crime police immediately launched an investigation into the matter, calling upon technical experts to assist in tracking down the fraudsters responsible for the heinous act.
As news of the scam spread, the community rallied around Dr. Karjagi, offering support and sympathy during his time of need. The elderly doctor was left shaken by the incident but remained determined to seek justice and ensure that others did not fall prey to similar scams.
