Officer-Involved Shooting in Jacksonville
In the early hours of the morning on Jacksonville’s Westside, a case of road rage escalated into a dangerous situation that resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The incident began near Martin Luther King Parkway and I-95, where a driver flagged down Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers to report a road rage incident involving another vehicle. The driver was able to provide the tag number of the aggressive driver’s vehicle.

High-Speed Chase and Arrest
Upon locating the suspect’s car, officers initiated a 30-mile chase, employing tactics such as pit maneuvers and deploying stop sticks at I-295 and Commonwealth Avenue. The suspect’s car eventually came to a stop near West Beaver Street after the tires were punctured by the stop sticks. The suspect, identified as Charles Guernsey, 45, then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Officer Takes Action
As Guernsey attempted to escape, an officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect and causing non-life-threatening injuries. Guernsey was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the initial road rage incident and why Guernsey chose to flee from law enforcement.
