Authorities Confirm the Tragic Incident

Upon receiving reports of the explosion, local military police, accompanied by Phnom Srok district police, health officials, and local authorities, swiftly arrived at the scene for inspection. Brigadier Chhim Bun Chhoeum, Commander of Phnom Srok Military Police, confirmed that the victim had tragically lost his life due to the explosion while trying to open the UXO with an axe. Following an autopsy, the police released the body to the victim’s grieving family for funeral rites.

Public Urged to Report UXOs

Ry Hang, Deputy Governor of Phnom Srok district, issued a public advisory urging residents to report any discovered weapons or UXOs to the relevant authorities and police. By informing the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), these dangerous items can be safely deactivated and removed. Hang emphasised the importance of not attempting to dismantle UXOs for profit, as such actions could lead to fatal explosions. He extended heartfelt condolences to the victim’s bereaved family.

Neighbour Recounts Victim’s Tragic End

Sourn Roeuk, a 56-year-old neighbour of the victim, revealed that Brong Bis had stumbled upon the UXO while ploughing his field. Despite placing it by the gate of his house for more than a year in an attempt to sell it as scrap metal, no buyers were willing to take the risk. Frustrated by his inability to sell the UXO, the victim made a fatal decision to break it apart with an axe, hoping to sell the pieces. Sadly, this choice led to the fatal explosion that claimed his life.
