A Terre Haute man, James D. Gaylor, 43, is facing serious allegations after being accused of smearing feces on the doors of the Vigo County Courthouse and City Hall. The investigation began on April 1, when Terre Haute police received a report from Mayor Brandon Sakbun regarding criminal mischief at City Hall. The incident occurred between 5 p.m. on March 30 and noon on March 31.

YouTube Video Bragging About the Crime

During the investigation, police discovered a YouTube video in which Gaylor appeared to brag about the crime. In the video, he mentioned seeing someone perform a similar act at the courthouse. However, he did not provide a motive for his actions. The court documents revealed that Gaylor was seen wearing a hooded jacket that matched the one worn by the suspect captured on surveillance footage on March 31.

Details of the Crime

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in Vigo County Court, Gaylor was captured on camera smearing what is believed to be human feces on the north entrance door of the courthouse and the east side entryway of City Hall. The affidavit mentioned that Gaylor also smeared feces on the window glass and door handle, potentially exposing individuals to harmful bodily waste.

Public Warning and Arrest

On April 1, a THPD Investigator recorded a cell phone video of Gaylor sitting in the courtyard between City Hall and the courthouse, warning people about the feces on the doors. Gaylor was arrested following the investigation, and THPD Sgt. Justin Sears confirmed the arrest. The probable cause affidavit called for a charge of criminal mischief/attempted battery by bodily waste.

Community Response and Legal Action

The incident has caused shock and outrage in the Terre Haute community, with many expressing concern over the safety and sanitation of public buildings. The authorities are taking swift action to address the situation and ensure the responsible individual is held accountable for their actions.
