A tragedy unfolded in Rockford, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon when a series of stabbings and attacks left four people dead and seven others injured, including a 15-year-old girl who died while saving her sister. The suspect, Christian Soto, 22, has been taken into custody on charges of murder, attempted murder, and home invasion. The city’s mayor described the violence as a “random and senseless act.”

The violent spree began with a call about a person being run over by a vehicle and possibly stabbed outside a home, where authorities found the bodies of a man and woman, identified as Jacob Schupbach, 23, and Ramona Schupbach, 63. Witnesses reported seeing Soto chasing Jacob Schupbach with a knife before running him over with a vehicle. Soto then proceeded to a nearby home, where he fatally stabbed a mailman, Jay Larson, who had been delivering mail in the neighborhood for 25 years.
In another location, Soto attacked three girls with a softball bat, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb. One of the injured girls recounted how Soto entered the home, demanded to know where a gun was, and then started swinging the bat at them. Jenna’s mother praised her daughter for sacrificing her life to protect her sister and friend during the horrific ordeal.
The violence continued as Soto broke into a woman’s home in Winnebago County and attacked her with a knife. A passing motorist intervened and was also stabbed by Soto before police arrived and apprehended the suspect. The injured woman and the Good Samaritan are both receiving medical treatment for their wounds.
Soto appeared in court and was denied pretrial release pending his next hearing. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and home invasion, with a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison for each count. His lawyer requested a delay in the next hearing to consult with Soto and his family.
