South Arkansas man Lovell Govan’s trial for a multitude of charges began today in El Dorado, Ark., under the watchful eye of Judge Jim Andrews. The case, which dates back to August 18th, 2020, involves Govan allegedly waiting in Edwina Howard’s home until she and her 17-year-old daughter arrived, and then shooting them 10 times before holding them hostage.

The jury, selected and sworn in for the trial, heard testimony from witnesses, including Howard herself. Deputy prosecutor Carla Gibson presented graphic evidence of Govan’s crimes through video and photos. The trial is expected to last two days, with updates to follow as the proceedings continue tomorrow.
Govan, a Huttig man, faces charges of Attempted Capital Murder, Kidnapping, Residential Burglary, Theft of Property, Terroristic Threatening, and Aggravated Assault stemming from the incident in Strong, Ark. on August 18, 2020. Authorities were called to the scene on Hickory Street, where they found a 39-year-old woman and her teenage daughter with gunshot wounds. Lovell Govan was identified as the alleged shooter.
According to reports, Govan had been waiting inside the victim’s home and shot both victims before holding them captive. Another victim and her 4-year-old daughter, who stopped by to see the victims, were also held against their will by Govan at gunpoint. The victims managed to escape when one of them distracted Govan, allowing them to seek help.
The mother and daughter, Edwina Howard and her 17-year-old, bravely shared their harrowing story of survival after being shot multiple times by Govan. Howard, who had recently ended a six-year relationship with Govan, recounted the terrifying night when he showed up at her home unannounced and opened fire.

Howard and her daughter endured hours of captivity and threats from Govan before managing to escape and seek help. The courage and resilience displayed by the victims in the face of such a traumatic experience are truly inspiring.
