Details of the Incident

According to reports, Covington police received a call about a burglary in progress at the apartment complex. The suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Charles Neace, was reportedly armed with a knife and was banging on the door of an apartment. When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered Neace outside the building, still holding the knife.

The body camera video released on Thursday shows the intense moments leading up to the fatal shooting. In the footage, officers can be heard instructing Neace to drop his weapon, but he refused to comply. Neace then proceeded to approach the officers with the knife, prompting the police to open fire.

Response and Justification

Following the shooting, Neace was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Commonwealth Attorney, Rob Sanders, stated that a total of 12 shots were fired, with Neace being hit by approximately nine bullets. Sanders deemed the officers’ actions justified, given the threatening nature of the situation.

Sanders explained, “Both officers were justified in the use of deadly force, considering the imminent danger posed by Mr. Neace, armed with a knife. The officers had to act swiftly to protect themselves from potential serious physical harm.”
